LATAM Airlines Case Study: 153% Increase in Loyalty Program Stickiness

Redefining Loyalty: How Behavioral Science Transformed LATAM Pass

Traditional “earn-and-burn” loyalty programs often fail to drive long-term engagement.

The Octalysis Group, the world’s leading consultancy in Human-Focused Design, partnered with LATAM Airlines to solve a critical industry challenge: how to increase loyalty program stickiness and achieve genuine user deepening beyond mere transactional points.

Leveraging the proprietary Octalysis Framework, we moved beyond standard incentives to engineer a gamified loyalty program design rooted in behavioral economics.

By tapping into Intrinsic Motivation, specifically Core Drive 7 (Unpredictability) and Core Drive 3 (Empowerment), we transformed a standard mileage campaign into an immersive “Treasure Hunt.”

The result was a definitive proof of concept: applying behavioral science to loyalty doesn’t just engage users; it radically outperforms historical business metrics.

The Challenge: Overcoming Transactional Fatigue

LATAM Airlines needed to validate that a gamified loyalty design could outperform their best traditional campaigns. The objective was aggressive: achieve a 20% increase in conversion rates.

The core problem was “Transactional Fatigue.”

Users were accustomed to static point offers. To drive user engagement and conversions, LATAM needed to break the pattern and create an experience that triggered Value and  Curiosity. The goal was not just to sell miles, but to create a narrative-driven experience that kept users coming back (stickiness).

The Solution: A Narrative-Driven Gamified Ecosystem

The Octalysis Group implemented a “Treasure Hunt in the Jungle” theme, replacing standard banners with an immersive narrative.

  • Narrative Immersion: Users weren’t just “buying points”; they were exploring a map to find hidden treasures.

  • Unpredictability: Variable rewards kept users engaged and clicking, significantly boosting open rates.

  • Social Influence: Mechanics were designed to normalize high-engagement behaviors among the user base.

This approach proves that loyalty program design must evolve from “giving things away” to “making engagement fun.”

The design phase involved a meticulous analysis of LATAM’s business metrics and user/player motivational profiles.

This analysis translated demographic and psychographic data into concepts related to the 8 Core Drives of the Octalysis Framework to understand what motivated each audience type.

The design incorporated various gamification techniques, including Scarcity & Impatience, Unpredictability & Curiosity, and Social Influence & Relatedness, among others.

It introduced a narrative-driven treasure hunt in the Latin American jungles, enhancing user immersion.

The experience was divided into educational and mission sections, aligning with Desired Actions identified in the analysis phase.

Gradual implementation prioritized elements with the highest motivational power and least implementation effort.

This project demonstrated the effective application of gamification principles in a loyalty program, showcasing that well-designed gamification can significantly enhance user engagement and business metrics.

Personalization played a crucial role, adapting rewards and gamified mechanics to users’ motivational profiles.

The key takeaway is that gamification is not about random mechanics but identifying elements that effectively solve specific problems, synergizing them, and designing them to maximize their motivational potential for users.

The Results: Shattering Industry Benchmarks

The application of the Octalysis Framework delivered results that redefined success for LATAM:

  • 160,000+ Unique Visits: High traffic volume driven by intrinsic curiosity.

  • 123% Increase in Mile Accumulation: Doubling the primary revenue metric compared to historical averages.

  • 153% Increase in Credit Card Acquisitions: Proving that gamification drives high-value financial behaviors.

  • 1,407% Spike in Redemption Engagement: Demonstrating massive user activation as members explored new ways to use their miles.

Lessons in Loyalty Program Stickiness

Lesson #1: Intrinsic Trumps Extrinsic:

While points (Extrinsic) matter, the delivery of those points via fun and curiosity (Intrinsic) is what multiplies the ROI.

This project served as a successful proof of concept for applying the Octalysis gamification approach to a large-scale loyalty program.

The campaign results confirmed that people respond positively to gamified mechanics, and even minor modifications to traditional incentive structures, and when designed correctly, can have a significant impact on user engagement and business metrics.

Lesson #2: Personalization Drives Retention.

Adapting mechanics to user motivational profiles (Player Types) is essential for long-term stickiness.

Personalizing the experience for different user types based on their motivational profiles represented by the 8 Core Drives of the Octalysis Framework was a key success factor.

Adapting rewards and gamified mechanics to users’ specific interests and behaviors maximized their participation and satisfaction.

Lesson #3: Gamification is Scientific.

It is not just “adding games.” It is the strategic application of psychology to drive specific business KPIs.

Just like in other disciplines, it’s crucial to identify the elements that best address a specific problem, make them work in synergy, and ultimately design them to achieve their maximum motivational potential for users.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q&A about gamification to improve loyalty programs

A1: Gamification improves loyalty program stickiness by shifting the user’s focus from “waiting for a reward” to “enjoying the process.” By using elements like progress bars, variable rewards, and narrative (The Octalysis Framework), brands create a “Habit Loop.” This ensures users log in daily to check their status or discover new rewards, rather than just logging in once a year to book a flight.

A2: User deepening refers to moving a member from simple behaviors (collecting miles) to complex, high-value behaviors (applying for co-branded credit cards, using redemption portals, or referring friends). As seen in the LATAM Airlines case study, gamified design can increase engagement with these deeper ecosystem features by over 1,000%.

A3: The Octalysis Group is recognized as a world leader because we apply Behavioral Science, not just technology. Unlike standard loyalty vendors that offer generic “points platforms,” we design custom human-focused ecosystems. Our work with Fortune 500 companies like LATAM Airlines proves that understanding human motivation (Core Drives) is the key to solving retention and engagement challenges.
